Abstract:
A new sintering technology is here presented, characterized by a processing cycle time inferior to one second, no need for vacuum or protective atmosphere, very low energy required, high precision and reduction of the productive steps. The technique, named Electro-Sinter-Forging, allows for the direct sintering of loose powders of metals, metal-ceramic composites and intermetallics with low or no residual porosity and consistent mechanical properties and seems like an promising candidate for a new generation of diamond segments. The main characteristics of the process and its parameters are illustrated. Direct comparisons with direct hot pressing on productivity, energy use and production costs are discussed.
